EFI University Releases the new "ACP" class!

EFI University has recently released the new "ACP" or "Accelerated Certification Program".

This one-week long class allows for a maximum of four students only and provides in-depth, hands-on training in the EFI field using state of the art equipment and two of the latest technology chassis dynamometers available from Dyna-Pack, and Dyno Dynamics.

"We found that students from far flung places around the world were having trouble attending all of the classes we offer here in the USA, and that this was making it difficult for them to achieve ther "High Performance Engine Tuner's Certification", as well as other, more local students who were having trouble meeting the requirements for the field service experience in using dynamometers, so we decided to create a safe, structured environment where anyone could come and spend time one-on-one with a qualified Fuel Injection Specialist to gain the knowledge and experience requirted to become certified," says Ben Strader, founder of EFI University.

This class lasts for five days and offer students all of the existing information in the acclaimed "EFI-101" and "EFI-Advanced" classes, plus the opportunity to work with both aftermarket EFI systems, and OEM type systems which require de-soldering of components from printed circuit boards and re-installing sockets for reprogramming the on-board memory.

The class provides enough hands-on experience throughout the week to meet all the field experience necessary for Certification, and allows the students an opportunity to take a written exam at the end of the week to obtain their "High Performance Engine Tuner's Certificiation."

"We were surprised when the first class in May sold out so quickly when we released in early April." Says Chris Cline, operations manager for EFI University, "We have already taken orders to fill up 50% of the next class scheduled for June to!"

What's Happening Around EFI U?

There is a lot of great news to share this month for the EFI University newsletter! Many great things have been happening over the last few months and we have been very busy trying to keep up with the demanding class schedule this year as well as trying to develop a plan for new courses and facilities!

(1)EFI University has chosen "Performance EFI" in San Diego, Ca as our official West-Coast headquarters! Derrick Knight, an EFI University Certified High Performance Engine Tuner says, "We are ecstatic to have been chosen as the major headquarters for EFI U! This is a program that we really belive in, both because of its content, and because of the sucess we have had in our own shop because of the credibility that being a certified tuner has brought us."

Perfomance EFI specializes in reprogramming high-end European and Japanese vehicle ECUs, and is also an Authorized MOTEC dealer, supplying high quality stand-alone EFI tuning and installation to San Diego's off-highway marketplace.

Ben Strader, founder of EFI University, says, "We are really excited about the potential this relationship bring to us, as well as the convenience and ease of accessability to the major San Diego Airport, which allows people from all over the world to come and learn at EFI University."

(2)We have added several new instructors to our program!

John Fowler, from Austin, Texas has been teaching our courses for about four months now and is doing a terrific job!

Soon, Chris Macellaro from Georgia, Matt Wright from Melbourne, Australia (currently living in SoCal), and John Reed from Portland Oregon will also be traveling the country delivering our acclaimed courses and helping students learn the ropes of aftermarket electronic fuel injection!

(3)We are happy to say that we are currently working with the manufacturers of EFILive to build a training seminar for their dealers and end users.

EFILive is a leader in scanning and programming interface technology for GM LS-1 powered vehicles. Their tools allow tuners to find out what is going on inside the ECU of any vehicle with an LS-1 engine and modify the factory calibration to match performance upgrades done to the engine or power-train simply by connecting to the OBDII ports! No wiring or installation of aftermarket computers, just simple, easy to use software and cable interface.

We are excited to be associated with such a great company and look forward to EFI University continuing to set the standard for supplying solid information to the aftermarket performance industry along with manufacturer specific training aids such as this one and many more like it.

Paul Blackmore and Ross Myers of EFILive in Australia will be visiting EFI University at the end of May, 2006 to finalize the course curriculums, and we should see dates on the calendar to begin the course as early as June!

(4)EFI University has also teamed up with Motec, USA to provide dealer and end-user training for the newest version of Motec editing software due for release late this year.

This new software will revolutionize the way Motec users interface and communicate with their engines. Users will have total control and flexibility over how each table is configured and what the axis definitions for each table are, as well as multiple configurations and maps for a single engine. This new software brings with it many advantages for performance, but also many challenges for the user with it’s steep learning curve and dramatic departure from the old ways of doing things with Motec.

EFI University is very excited and proud to be chosen as the leading supplier of information for such a well-known and respected company as Motec.

We have delivered two of these courses already in California, and North Carolina, and more dates are being added to the schedule soon!

(5)And in other partnership news, we're pleased to announce Innovate Motorsports as the "Official Tuning Tools" of EFI University. Many of you probably already use one of Innovate's widebands or data acquisition products, and you're familiar with the progress they've made in bringing high-end digital tuning tools to mortal price points. Check out their latest stuff, including the new 32-channel data logger.

Look for a lot more exciting things to develop as we enter into the summer months! We have a few more tricks up our sleeve and we can’t wait to develop them and share more knowledge with you! Until then……Stay “Tuned”

EFI TUNING TIP

Tuning Ignition Timing Tables

Whether you are tuning an engine on an engine dyno or a chassis dyno, you should always make sure that it gets tuned to the proper amount of ignition timing.

The best way to do this is to use a steady state holding pattern on the dyno and hold the engine to a specific RPM. Then load the engine to whatever site you wish to tune and record the instantaneous power readings.

When you make a change to add or subtract ignition timing, you will normally see a corresponding change in power output.

Using an onboard or aftermarket Knock sensor to check for detonation is the easiest way to find the maximum allowable ignition advance. However, if you do not have access to one, here is another way to get pretty close.

Advance the timing until maximum power is reached and begins to fall off when more timing is added. From there, back off the ignition advance one or two degrees and set it there.

Once you have made a few hard pulls on the engine at this setting, shut it off and remove the spark plugs. Inspect them for obvious signs of detonation or erosion. Pay careful attention to the J-shaped ground strap. You will notice that somewhere on the strap it begins to change color.

Ideally, when the proper timing is set, there will be enough heat in the combustion chamber to make the color change at about the center of the strap. If it changes more out towards the end of the strap, then there is not enough heat, and more advance is needed. Conversely, if the color change is near the bottom where the strap joins the plug, then take some ignition advance out in order to start the burn later and transfer more heat out the exhaust!
