I have just stripped down this engine to find the cause of compression loss
Top rings are damaged
Pistons have marks also, Parts of the rings stuck in them.
Anyone seen this type of damage before? |

What bore diameter and top ring gap?
Do you have photos of the top of the piston, as well as the ring gap, and chambers?
In the first photo, the piston looks scuffed near the top - hard to see in that particular photo. Do you have a better photo of that spot?
Only one cylinder, or several/all? _________________ "To achieve anything in this game you must be prepared to dabble in the boundary of disaster." -Sterling Moss |

| Install new rings with a ring ridge in the top of the bores? |

81mm bore
ring gap = standard so not sure
top of the piston is perfect, no damage
Reading further into it I think it is detonation damage, The chrome has come off the piston ring.
"One of the shortcomings of coated steel rings is seen more on the performance side. Richards says if you put a coated ring into a cylinder where there's high pressure and heat for short bursts (such as drag racing) and you detonate the motor, you may flake the moly or chrome off the ring, ruining the cylinder, piston and ring in the process" |

I'd be interested to know what the exact ring end gap is.
Seems like if it was due to pure detonation you would see it on the piston tops. _________________ http://www.dkGoodrich.com

My first experience with "filled rings" was the same as your picture.
I suggest your call Mike at RaceTec Pistons (714-903-4362) he will provide "coated" steel rings that will NOT flake.
RaceTec Pistons is owned by Wayne Brooks, the man who bought Jans Engineering creating (J.E. Pistons)
by retaining the Calvert brothers (C.alvert/ P.inkle Pistons) away from Nick Aris, (Aris Pistons).
You will find a quality operation at a VERY fair cost for needed items.

| Moly filled iron top rings will only handle so much power with small amounts of detonation (or none) before falling apart, go to a steel top ring. |
