| Hey guys i thought i might find some help over here since im fresh out of ideas. First of all a customer at our shop brought in a sandrail with a jdm ej20 wrx motor in it equipped with a motec m4. He had it towed to our shop because the prior shop couldnt get the ecu to connect to there labtop and im having the same problem now. It has a two msd box's 1 of them controls 1-3 cyl and the other controls 2-4. It comes with a serial connector with a serial to usb adapter to connect with my labtop. My question to all of you is how would i go about getting this ecu to connect to my labtop. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I had the same problem, at that time the "cable" was $800.00.
The M4 has no RS-232 driver IC, at the least, the one that I had to connect.
I looked on the floor, found a MAX3232 that I use for my IC.
I then soldered that item into the DB-9, I had comm's.
Then I had to break the "locking" code, It happened to be Quirts birthday.

$800. I dont remember any motec cable that expensive!!
What is the serial number of your M4?
if it is less than 3000, you need to use a motec specific PCI cable, available from any motec dealer for about $150 or so
If it is a number > 3000, then you can just use a $10 straight serial cable to talk to the ECU. |

I agree, my point was that for $2.00 worth of parts they can be built AND that information was gladly provided to me by JGM.
I also said "cable" in italics, so I will explain.
The first MoTec, a fuel only controller (FCU) had no external RS-232, fuel was controlled with ten "screwdriver" adjustments, sold in early 1990. (no RS-232 needed)
The second MoTec ECU "M G2-3D" used a DB-9 "TTL" to output Serial Data to the "$800.00 Cable",
a good product (M G2 RS-232) that included a switching box to select the Baud Rate from 300-19,200. (sold in 1992)
The third, M-? I have no information ???
The M4 <3000 unit # needed the $150.00 cable.
The M4 greater unit #3000 used a DB-9 straight $10.00 cable.
