Some people have asked if EFI 101 is a pre-requisite course for taking EFI advanced.

Simply, yes.

Some tuners have already installed and tuned several systems and feels that they are beyond the level of instruction provided by the introductory class.

While the EFI 101 class is entry level, we feel that many of the topics covered typically dispell many rumors and open up many truths about the how- and why's of engine's and fuel injection systems.

It is our opinion that even those with lots of hands-on practical experience in tuning may not have ever learned the fundamental scientific properties behind WHY they do things.......the point is that we feel that while there may be a lot of tuners putting the right numbers into the maps, there are few who actually can explain WHY those are the right numbers.

We know that not everything needed to be a profesional tuner is taught in our EFI 101 class, especially the number one ingredient.......many hours of practice. However, by taking the EFI 101 course, we find that many learn much about what is actually taking place inside the engine and this leads to totally new tuning techniques and a more complete understanding of engine tuning in general.

Still, there are those who feel they have progressed beyond the need for rudimentary training and think that their time and money would be wasted on such a course. For this reason, we will be offering a "test-out" option where folks can pay a fee to take a test online. If they pass the test, then they can qualify for automatic entrance into the advanced class.

This test will NOT be easy and is not reccomended for most beginner and intermediate tuners. The test will only be allowed to be taken once to prevent someone from looking up the answers afterwards and trying again. The test is designed to test the very limits of one's tuning knowledge and some topics in the test will not have been covered in the EFI 101 class, so they can only have been learned thorugh one's own study of science, physics, and math in addition to large amounts of actual tuning experience.

Here are some examples of questions that may be on the test:

1} Explain in detail how an engine's BSFC affects the injector selection process?

2} If an engine had a BSAC of 7.5, and consumed 1,500 cfm of air.......how much power could it be expected to make at standard atmospheric conditions?

3} If an engine had a wedge shaped combustion chamber with the sparkplug located near the exhaust valve, would it require more or less advance than a combustion chamber with a pent-roof design with the sparkplug in the center of the chamber, and why?

4} If a 120 cubic inch, single cylinder engine had a VE of 100%, and an injector that was capable of flowing 96lbs of fuel per hour at 100% duty cycle, then what pulse width would be required of it at 6,500 RPM under normal conditions of atmosphere and fuel pressure to obtain an air/fuel ratio of 13:1?

5} At the same operating point, what would be the lowest acheiveable air fuel ratio with the given parameters?

Well, these and about 20 other questions of varying difficulty will be on the test, so if you think you're up to it, then keep watching for the upcomming link to take the challenge!

A candidate must correctly answer at least 80% of the test questions in order to bypass the EFI 101 class.

Good Luck!

Whoa......that stuff is more complicated than I thought.........

I figured it was was just about making bigger numbers for richer and smaller numbers for leaner! lol

Guess I need to sign up for the EFI 101 class!

I must have missed when we covered that stuff. Is it part of the curriculum being added to the newer efi101 classes?

Just about all of this info is covered in the 101 seminar, but up until now it has not been in the textbook........newer manuals will be much more informative and be a better resource for returning to after the seminar.

I've learned a lot about how to be a better teacher through the past seminars and one thing I've learned is that people only remember about 1/5th of what I teach verbally.......that means I have to do some more work and add it to the textbook so that the students can go back later and get the most education for the money!

Can we get the supplement to the new manuals as PDFs if we have already taken the 101 seminar? Laughing

Yes Chris,

We will be making the new manuals available for former students, but there may be a small charge involved to cover the cost of printing and shipping.
We'll talk more about it when the manuals are ready!

No need to print and ship when you have the power of Adobe Technology Laughing and email...

Wouldnt that cause less headache for everyone involved including you? I'll help with the conversion if thats a factor?

Those questions aren't too daunting for me; the only "iffy" thing about answering them would be unit conversions (thankfully I have some nice software in a cheapo Palm to help me out).

Yeah, I know. It's borderline cheating. Razz

-Chris

P.S. I would have needed to look up the mass of air per ft^3 @ STP -- apparently .076lbm/ft^3 as answered above by Geoffrey. I can't usually pull those sort of figures off the top of my head. Sad

P.P.S. Though I haven't dealt with the term "BSAC" before, the concept is very easy to understand. The only problem I have from not having dealt with it is figuring the units given. Apparently BSAC is measured in hp-min per lbm.

Did I miss the link somewhere? I would like to test out of the 101 and take your advanced, if I can.

The test-out optional test is no longer available. Sad

Sorry,

Can I ask why? Having a test seems like a good idea. Does this mean I HAVE to take 101 before advanced?

Looking at these questions, now after taking the efi101 class; it's nice to know that I stand a chance taking that test. Cool

hit me up with some more 'practice' questions.

I had my son, Eighteighttwoz, take the test. He gave me the correct answers to the questions. I knew he had the capability to run an engine correctly. I asked him to operate the engine. What I found was an engine that seemed weak. I checked the blood pressure, it was low. I raised it to 45psi. Still, the engine ran better though not well enough. I was beginning to worry. We went to a specialist. The exam revealed an offset crank position sensor location. The doctor adjusted the target wheel, now TDC was correct, not the 12 degrees retard as before. Upon restart Twoze (his nickname) ran the engine perfectly. Thank goodness for the existance of a professional.

the information in efi101 was extremely useful to me. but like a new toy, I have to get use to the new information. I am afraid that when I take the advance class that I'm going to be lost all over again. I'm a graduate of efi 101 on nov 11, 12th. in xx tuning in ct. I'm going to take the class in february 07. In the meantime, I continuing to read and re-read the information on my efi 101 manual. by the way, i don't have access to a dyno unless xx tuning will be willing to allow a novice tuner to use their facility. I don't know how they will feel about that. any suggestion efiguy. thanks sir.
