|
|
Hi everybody, I have been playing around with a couple of big block race boats for a couple of years.
Was wondering if anybody on this site has had any experience in this field.
1 boat is a 21 ft Superclass hull with 572 cu/in all alloy engine running 5 ltr Whipple, Autronic SMC (marine), IMPCO leg.
2 boat is a 21 ft Natwell hull with 469 cu/in BB Chev, Twin Garrett T51 turbos, Autronic SMC (marine) and now BROKEN (fully smashed) 3 DRIVE.
Would be good to chat.
Over here we tune using air/fuel ratios from what i have been told alot of youse use EGT with Pyrometers.
Are pyrometers a problem, with water cooled manifolds.
Regarding accurate temps in relation to an O2 sensor being directly in the exhaust flow path.
Excuse my ignorance on this subject.
I am interested as Exhaust temp tuning over hear it is very uncommon. |

Shouldn't be a problem using a K-type sensor in the manifold. They're stainlees steel. The numbers may be lower than most cars however. I think that would be more of a benefit to you and your turbo though |

I use both. We use a ceramic coated steel adapter block between the head and water cooled manifold.

Sorry to get a little off topic.
Just wondering if someone can provide info on the best way to put an O2 sensor in a water cooled manifold?
I have had to tune a few pleasure type boats which can take quite a while if you are doing it from looking at the plugs.

With the boats i tune, i get the customers to have an O2 threaded adaptor welded into the manifolds.
Not to much of a problem with ski/race boats.
Could be a pain to get done on a twin stern drive pleasure cruiser or the like.
Make sure the welding is done properly.
I had one leak and it cost me a sensor real quickly.
Saltwater on a hot O2 sensor spells "NOT WORKY ANYMORE" |

Thanks for that. I will have a think about how to do it. I was hoping to be able to put it after manifold but as I thought the water will kill the sensor. Fortunatly the manifolds are unbolt into two parts so it will be possible to weld from both sides. I have access to a welding furnace so I might try find a stuffed manifold and practice on that.
